Buddy Austin wants Lincoln's pole-vault record
By David S • á • May 2, 2008

In his second meet after returning from breaking his right leg, Buddy Austin confronted disappointment. At a meet in Jacksonville last summer, the Lincoln High School pole vaulter failed to elevate off the ground, never mind clearing the cross bar.

"I was trying too hard," Austin said. "I was really disappointed. I had three attempts, and I didn't clear anything. I didn't want to quit. I knew I needed to practice a little bit and get back to it."

In addition recovering from his Jacksonville performance, Austin needed a new coach. His pole vaulting coach, Kurt Westfall, had died of a stroke in March 2007.

It was nearly a year after Westfall's death that Austin found a good fit in Jacksonville pole vaulting coach Ira Welborn. Welborn had watched Austin struggle at the meet the previous summer, and he's helped Austin improve enough to qualify for today's Class 3A Track and Field Championships in Winter Park.

In his third season as a pole vaulter, Austin is making his first state finals appearance. This season he won the district title and finished third in the regional meet.

"I've been jumping better," Austin said. "My form is better, and he's helped me a lot getting planted right and my jumping."

Austin enters the state meet ranked 11th with a 12-foot, 6-inch qualifying vault. His personal best is 13-1, and he enters the state meet with intentions of breaking the Lincoln High record of 13-6.

"I've seen a lot of improvement," Lincoln boys' track coach Jimmy Everett said. "We are really waiting for him to break out.

"He knows where he stands, and, hopefully, he'll get the butterflies out of the way and get his head right."
