CARLISLE:
I would like to hear from any CARLISLE descendants of John CARLISLE and SARAH COLEMAN of Edgecombe County. John died in Edgecombe, leaving a will. Need their descendants for a CHAMBLESS/CHAMBLISS Family History. John was the son of Richard and Mary CHAMBLESS CARLISLE of Prince George County, Virginia. Richard Carlisle died in Prince George County, Va. in 1739. Would appreciate any and all help and will exchange information. Thank you.

I would like to add something about the Carlisles. My grandmother had an avid interest in her ancestors. In a chart she drew in the 1960s, she stated that Phoebe was a Graham from England. I have not been able to verify this in any documents. She always believed that they came from England to New England (Mass.?), to Virginia, then to SC. I can also state that I checked all of the Militia Lists of the Battle of Bunker Hill and could not find a Carlisle to match the description. However, I do not think that Daniel (if that was Phoebe's husband) died at Bunker Hill. And the reason is this: Richard states that he was born in South Carolina in 1774. There is no reason for Daniel to be in Mass., if his family is indeed in SC. I believe that Phoebe's husband was killed in the Rev War, but I think that he may have been with the South Carolina Militia or Continentals. I have found four Carlisles killed in SC during the war: John and Robert of the 2nd SC Continental Line, John of the SC Militia, and the strongest possibility being a Cadet [military rank]? Carlisle, (enlisted in Virginia)serving with the Continental Dragoons and killed at the Battle of Eutaw Springs on September 9, 1781.
This is the most that I could find. Hope this helps to unravel some of this.

-------------------------------------------------------
I read your message and it's very interesting. I can tell you are serious about your research of this family, and so am I. One question though--It is printed in the History of the old Cheraws that Phoebe's husband was killed in the Battle of Bunker Hill. But, it also says that Phoebe found her husband there next to a stream running red with blood. How could she have been there? But, maybe they lived in Boston at that time and Richard really was not born in S.C... Confusing! Billie Johnson

Billie,
I appreciate your comment. Yes, I am afraid that the History of Old Cheraw may be hurtng our search more than helping. Several years ago, I spoke to the Historian for the National Park Service there (Bunker Hill). I read him the passage and he seemed to think that there was something not really right about it. Something like the only stream that was near there was not near the fighting, or something I cannot recall. Again, one cannot help but wonder if Carlisle was there, could he have been British?, or at least on their side? Still, Richards own recollection that he was born in SC in 1774 could be mistaken, but I tend to put more credance in this statement. There are many, many stories of the Revolutionary War out there. Maybe someone has the missing peice that will one day sort it all out.

Generation No. 1

1. JAMES1 CARLISLE I was born Bet. 1730 - 1740 in Tarnaneal, County Monaghan, Ireland, and died Bef. December 06, 1770 in Abbeville, South Carolina. He married ANN IRVING Unknown in Tarnaneal, County Monaghan, Ireland. She was born Unknown in Tarnaneal, County Monaghan, Ireland, and died Bef. 1770 in Abbeville, South Carolina.

JAMES CARLISLE I

James Carlile, a farmer in Tarnaneal, County Monaghan in the 1750's, sailed for America in the fall of 1769 with his young family. Pious Presbyterians, James and his wife, Ann Irvine Carlile, and their young children left Belfast aboard the crowded ship Hopewell and arrived in Savannah, GA in December after six weeks at sea.

After waiting several days in the hull of the ship for clearance to leave the harbor, the passengers sailed up the Savannah River to a plantation for immigrants near Queensborough, GA. But when the plantation failed to live up to its advertising, several families, including the Carliles, hired the ship's captain to take them to Charleston. There James and Ann were treated well and granted land at Long Cane in the old Ninety-Six District which later became Abbeville.

The Charleston, S.C. Court of Ordinary recorded the proceedings as follows:

Citation granted to Samuel Paxton and Jane Carlile daughter of James Carlile of Long Canes to Administer the Estate and Effects of James Carlile late of Long Canes, Prince William Parish, Craven County as nearest of kin. To be read in the Parish Church aforesaid and returned certified (by the minister), granted 6th December 1770.

In 1775, a royal grant of 400 acres in the name of James Carlile was signed by William Bull, Esq., Lieutenant Governor, Province of South Carolina. The grant, made five years after James' death, was terms a memorial and apparently intended as a rememberance by his family.

James could have also been a teacher or minister as well as a farmer.

Generation No. 2

2. JAMES2 CARLISLE (JAMES1) was born May 23, 1763 in Tarnaneal, County Monaghan, Ireland, and died April 09, 1842 in Abbeville, South Carolina. He married MARGARET BOLES October 15, 1783 in Abbeville, South Carolina, daughter of JOHN BOLES and ANN UNKNOWN. She was born June 27, 1762 in South Carolina, and died August 13, 1857 in Abbeville, South Carolina.

JAMES CARLISLE

James Carlile, son of the immigrant, was only six years old when his family came to America. He was born May 23, 1763 in Tarnaneal, County Monaghan, Ireland. At age 17, he was drafted into the South Carolina militia as a private, and three weeks later fought in what has been called the greatest tactical victory ever won on American soil, the Battle of Cowpens in upper South Carolina. The fighting began Jan 17, 1781 near Spartanburg. James served under his brother, Captain Francis Carlile. Both served under the command of Col. Andrew Pickens.

Around 1790 James built a house of hewn logs just northwest of Lowndesville, SC on land granted to him for his service during the Revolutionary War. The property remains in the family to this day. James and Margaret raised their family, farmed, and lived there for the rest of their lives. The house has been added onto over the years, but the original log house still stands, and the graves of James and Margaret in the field approximately 200 yards behind it have only recently been marked. About 60 people are buried there in the Carlile Family Cemetery including James and Margaret's oldest son, John, and his wife, Frances Tucker. A descendant of John and Frances currently owns the property where the old home and cemetery are located.

MARGARET BOLES

Margaret Boles-Carlisle died at her residence, in the upper part of Abbeville District, South Carolina, about the 13th of August last, Mrs. Margaret Carlisle. The deceased was about ninety-five years of age, and had been a zealous and confident member of the Associated Reformed Church at Little Generostee, under the successive pastorates of Revs. Robert Irwin, Ebenezer E. Pressley, D.D. and James C. Chambers. Her zeal for the Glory of God, in attending the public ordinances of this house, was not perceived to experience any diminuities until utterly incapacitated by the infirmities of old age. How forceably does her case illustrate the scripture truth: "Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like a shock of corn cometh in the season" Job: vs 26:[Shackelford & related families.FBK.FTW]
