Notes from John Steelman: (John Steelman is related to Mary Jane Steelman, wife of Cordy Purdy)
By 1870, the family was in Dallas County, Arkansas. The girls had all married or died. John Purdy evidently died
after coming to Arkansas (More on that later). His wife, Mary, John F, and Samuel are living with James and
Mary Brooks. I suspect that Mary Brooks is the Purdy Daughter, Mary, listed in the Georgia, 1860 census. All
ages seem to coinside with the 1860 census ages.

Notes about the John Franklin and Eliza Theresa Purdy Family (written by Katherine Bradshaw Harrison)
Buried in Woodman Cemetery, Coalgate, Okla
PURDY, JOHN FRANKLIN FAMILY p. 355 Coal County Book
John Franklin Purdy was born Sept. 15, 1853. Eliza Theresa Fowler was born Nov 24, 1863. They were married
in late 1870. To this family were born nine children.

3
They moved to Coal County in early 1900 and lived in Coalgate, I. T., at the hotel which Mrs. Hightower ran
later. Then they moved to the Round Hill community where John was a farmer. Round Hill was five miles east
and one mile south of Coalgate.
Round Hill school was not there as they went to school about one mile east of the Round Hill. They also went to
church there. I don't know what the school was called. Mother took us to see where it was. In 1932 the foundation
and part of the chimney still stood. When the new school was built, they were called new and old.
Some of the boys, after growing up, moved to other places to find work. Then they moved to Phillips where
Grandma Purdy lived until 1920 when she passed away.
I have a letter she wrote. Times were hard. She told of how she would help when they killed hogs and made
sausage and would use fat and other parts to make soap. She told how she made her garden and canned all she
raised for winter.
Grandpa died June 25, 1913. Then she married Grandpa Jackson. After Grandpa Jackson passed on she was alone
for a long time. She would visit her children after she got her garden over and the canning done. I never knew her
as she died three months before I was born. I read her letters to know her. Grandma died Jan. 15, 1920. She and

Grandpa Purdy are buried in the Woodman Cemetery, east of Coalgate.
Children born to John Franklin and Eliza Theresa Purdy were:

Cordy Adwell, born Dec. 24, 1870 (step-son to Eliza), married Abby Stiles; May Bell, born April 6, 1881, died
March 7, 1939, married Ira Blashers, buried Woodman Cemetery; Robert Early, born May 15, 1882 married
Ellen Stiles; Samuel Tandy, born June 7, 1887, died Jan. 23 1930, married Annie Samuel; Ethel Virginia, born Feb. 22, 1885, died Feb. 16, 1901; Daniel Orestus, born Sept. 23 1890, married Onoie Stiles; Eura Salina, born
April 6, 1894, died April 14, 1965, buried in Sprinville, CA married Albert Hicks; Benny, born June 30, 1896,
died July 1, 1896; Ollie Beatrice, born Feb 6, 1898, died Oct 27, 1968, buried Oakview Cemetery, Antioch, CA
married Ira James Bradshaw; Leonard Augustus, born Jan.22, 1893 never married.
All the Purdys are buried in the Woodman Cemetery, east of Coalgate, except three of the girls. There was a large
fenced lot, but someone took the fence down.
Brother Magness preached most of their services.
I am the daughter of Ollie. She had five girls and one boy. Most of them had large families. Early did not have a
family.

THE LOG HOUSE SCHOOL

The Log House School was an old cabin that was built by hand hewn logs long before the turn of the century.
After Oklahoma became a state they held school in the log cabin and tagged it the Log Cabin School. School was held there for five or six years until the old Round Hill School was opened, about 1912 or 1913. The names of the teachers who taught there were: 1. Miss Mary Ellen Stiles 1907-1908, 2. Mrs. Logan 1908-1909, 3. Miss Miro 1909. For a while Mrs. Logan and Miss Miro taught in the same room 4. Mrs. Laughter 1910 on to the closing of the school. Sometime during this time Mrs. Laughter had a name change. She Married L.A. Hudson of Coalgate and she is well remembered as Mrs. Hudson.
Some pupils that attended the Log Cabin school were: Ethel, Avery and Ezra Sutton, Herman and Rickman Stiles, Emmer and Lon Stiles, Arthur and Ernest Stiles and Eura and Ollie Purdy.

Three of the former students are still living. They are: Avery Sutton born 1898, now living inTulare, California.
Reverend Ezra Sutton born 1902, now living at Walnut Grove, California, and Arthur Stiles born in 1902 and
now living in Fort Collins, Colorado. The Sutton brothers have school records from the school.
The Long Cabin School was used on weekends for recreational doings. Church was held on Sunday performed by different preachers each Sunday. One of the ministers was Reverend Lum Ruth and on my parents Marriage license, date 11 September 1915, he is listed as a Minister of the Gospel, Methodist.
4
Another activity at the school was called "Dinner on the Ground". Tthe enclosed picture was taken at a Dinner on the Ground. I have a letter written by John Franklin Purdy to his son Robert Early Purdy and dated Coalgate, Oklahoma, May 13, 1913. A few lines from the letter describe one of these meetings, and I quote, "We had a big singing and dinner on ground yesterday, Had a fine time. Used the Sacred Harp Books. Town people came out. I was one of the leaders. We all done our best. Said to be the best singing we have had there." At these dinners the people brought the food and Mr. Hudson furnished the lemons and sugar to make lemonade. He also funished the tin cups for drinking the lemonade. One of the attractions of the old log cabin was that the palce had a cistern for water.
After the school closed the place was still used for some recreational activities. The building finally deteriorated from lack of use and had disappeared by about 1925.

The cabin was located on a section of land owned by Will Cummings. The section took in Round Hill. Tthe
section line was east of the Cummings place and the north line was about 1/2 to 3/4 mile from Round Hill. In a ravine by the school (a block or so) was a small log house or hut. another thing about this section of land was that my uncle Cordy Purdy bought forty acres of it. He built the family home and lived there for years. Their home was located across from the old Round Hill school.

Information about the Old Log School was given to me by people who lived there during the time the log house
was in use. They are: Etta M. Stiles, Sacramento, CA; Henry Purdy, Tulsa, Oklahoma; Bill Bradshaw, Heber
Springs, Arkansas, Katherine Bradshaw Harrison, Antioch, CA; Arthur Stiles,Fort Collins, Colorado; Reverend Ezra Sutton, Rio Vista, CA and Avery Sutton of Turlare, CA.

Notes for Cordy Adwell Purdy:
Pauline Garcia remembers that Uncle Cordy was blind in one eye (went blind as a young child). Just before he
died, he lost sight in his other eye. On his WWI draft registration is states there is a problem with his eye. Ollie
Bradshaw went up to help his wife (3rd wife-name unknown. She had a daughter named Opal).
A message board note: from a John Steelman has information that Cordy's mother died in childbirth. He was
raised by his grandmother- Elizabeth Steelman.
1880- Cordy was 5 years old. He was living with his grandmother, Elizabeth Steelman, and went by the name

Notes from John R Purdy Jr. (March 2008)-
There is a story in our family that Cordy married 3 times. An unknown wife followed Abbie. Died almost
immediately. No children. Then the 3rd wife was the step-grandmother for me. I never knew much about her.
Saw her often when they lived near us in West Tulsa. I was only 5,6, or 7 when I knew her. After Cordy died I
never saw her again. She went home to her faily in Woleetka. (Sp?)
My father, Uncle Henry and myself attended her funeral. Don’t remember the exact year but I would have been
in High School (late 50’s). Her name was Georgia (I believe) because we all called her Georgie.
The Elizabeth you mentioned could very well be the 2nd wife. No children by Cordy and she died quickly. She
would have been married to Cordy some time between 1925 and 1945. By 1945 we all remember Georgie.
Cordy only had five children by his wife Abbie. They were John, Henry, Jewel, Leah, Rachel.
Patsy (Henry Purdy's daughter) remembered that Cordy died from Diabetes. He lost his eye sight from the
diabetes.

39 iii. Jewel Purdy, born 1913 in Oklahoma. She married Unknown Johnson; born in Oklahoma.
Notes for Jewel Purdy:
Notes from John Purdy Jr. (March 2008)-
Jewel died many years ago. Don’t know date, or cemetery. Probably a paupers grave. She common-law
married to a Johnson. (I think). Both are dead. Don’t know any of the kids or if they survived. Know one
son died in 2004 or 2005. A lawyer wanted to know who would pay for him. Patsy (Henry's daughter)
remembered that Jewel had several children, but never married.

37. John Rickman5 Purdy (Cordy Adwell4, John Franklin3, John2, James1) was born 25 Dec 1906 in
Oklahoma, and died 24 Feb 1985 in Agra, Oklahoma. He married Madera Ophelia Shoemake Abt. 1930. She
died 03 Dec 1985 in Agra, Oklahoma.
Notes for John Rickman Purdy:
Notes from John R Purdy Jr. (March 2008)-
John Rickman Purdy worked building pipe lines all over the United States and some overseas.
John Purdy Sr. was named John Rickman Purdy, after Abbie’s father- Alfred Rickman Stiles. But he wanted me
to be a Jr. and my mother did not like Rickman for a middle name. so he always called himself Richard, so I
could be a Jr. Neither of us ever used the middle initial spelled out, so no one knew .
John Sr. did not care for life on the farm in Agra, Ok at first. It reminded him of his experiences of farm life
growning up in Coalgate, OK. After a few years, he had many friends in town. He would go visit them everyday.
When Madera became more ill, he took care of her. One day he went to check on the hogs and fell in the pen he
was watering. He laid there for 5 hours in 102 degree heat. He was able to let the hose run on him all afternoon,
which saved his life. A few months after that he fell off the porch and broke his hip. He had surgery, but was
given to much anesthetic. He was never the same after that. He was bedridden also. He died about 2 years after
the broken hip. At the same time of John Sr. health problems his wife, Madera also started having health
problems. She had heart and kidney problems. She was in and out of the hospital several times. She passed
away 10 months after John Purdy Sr.
His father- John Purdy Sr. died at home (on the farm in Agra). My parents were both living with me. He was bedridden
the last 2 years and got around in a wheel chair. Died in my arms at 9am exactly on a Sunday morning.
(Feb. 24, 1985) Mother was senile for the last 5 or 6 years.
Notes for Madera Ophelia Shoemake:
Notes from John R Purdy Jr (March 2008)
My mom was born in Richland Springs, Texas April 6, 1908. Since my folks never kept or shared records with
me, I don’t know when or where they married. But I think they were 37 & 35 or 35 & 33 respectively when I was
born in 1941.
Mom’s name was Madera Ophelia Shoemake. Her family lived on a farm on China Creek in San Saba County,
Texas. Mom HATED her middle name and I was in my 30s before a relative let it slip out. When she signed
legal papers, people always invented a middle name or initial. So she just wrote A. Mom died 9 months after dad
on 12/3/1985 at Stillwater Medical Center of kidney failure and congestive heart failure. They are buried in the
Purdy Family Plots in the Osage Cemetery, Agra, Oklahoma.
Once she came to live with John Jr. in Agra, she loved being on the farm. She would look after the livestock,
planted flowers, fruit trees and a garden. She is the one who drew the plans for the main house and hired the
neighbors to build the house while she superivsed! As her health got worse over the years, she slowed down. She
had dementia the last 4 or 5 years. She did not recognize anyone except for John Jr. She would sit on the porch
most days and look out at the farm, trees and flowers. John Sr. took care of her while John Jr. was at work. She
passed away in 1985 after continued failing health. She died 10 months after her husband- John Rickman Purdy
Sr.
Children of John Purdy and Madera Shoemake are:

Ana Vieira. He was born 31 Aug 1914 in San Francisco CA, and died 16 Jun 1988 in Santa Clara CA.
Notes for Pauline Evelyn Bradshaw:
Growing up in Oklahoma- Notes from Pauline Evelyn Bradshaw Garcia
Ira and Ollie (Purdy) Bradshaw
Children: Lorene, Katherine, Allene, Pauline, Eugene, Rosalee
Most of the houses they lived in had wood floors-bare wood, not finished wood.
The table was made out of strips of wood, and they had benches, not chairs. The table and benches were bare
wood also. The kitchen had a stove, small counter, wood stove for heat. There was no refrigerator. The kids
would sleep 3 or 4 to a bed. The outside of the house was never painted, always bare wood.
They had to walk everywhere. Once in awhile they might get a ride in a wagon. They never had any money.
Sometimes they might have five cents to get candy. Pauline would hide hers to make it last longer.
The kids would make playhouses out of whatever they could find. They would make up games to play outside.
Pauline remembers being happy as a child, they did not know any different. All the kids like it when their dad-Ira
Bradshaw- was not home. He was very strict, and very grump all the time. He gave out extremely hard
punishment.
Families they worked for would give them extra fruit and vegetables from their own gardens. Pauline and her
sisters would help grandma Ollie peel and can the foods. When they did not have the canned foods, they would
eat bread and gravy, or Ollie would make soups. They did not have very much of those either.
Pauline remembers being at a friend’s house once. They were a little better off than the Bradshaw family. For a
snack the girls had crackers and milk. Pauline remembers that was such a treat-they never had crackers at home,
and rarely had milk.
16
Grandma Ollie would make all the girls dresses out of flour sack material. Many times the girls had to wear boys
overalls. They were cheap and lasted a long time. Pauline hated the overalls, and still does not like them! All the
girls were embarrassed to go to school, because they would have to wear the overalls. Many days they had
nothing to take for lunch. They might have a left over biscuit from breakfast. Pauline remembers being hungry
most of the time.
The Bradshaw family moved a lot-where ever Ira could find work. Most of the towns were little settlements in
Coal County Oklahoma. The family would live in an old house on the property. Some of the towns were:
Scivallys Chapel-went to school here. Pauline had pneumonia; she was unconscious for 9 days. Grandpa Ira
bought her a new pair of shoes that she had been wanting. They thought she was going to die. She was about 8 or
9 years old.
Round Hill, went to Round Hill School. The school would have cakewalks to raise money. The school would
also buy fabric to make dresses for the girls. Pauline cannot remember what the boys got. The dresses were
usually out of very cheap, thin fabric.
Washington, Oklahoma
Lehigh- Ira did farming for the family. Here he had 2 horses, most of the time there were no horses. They also
got milk from the farm owner. Ira would get a forth of the crop he worked. The owner would provide the seed,
Ira did all the work. The family lived here 4 years, this was the longest they lived in one house.
Philips- a small town between Lehigh and Scivaly Chapel. The family lived close to Ira and Maybell (Purdy)
Beashears. They got to play with Dorothy.
Coalgate- Ira worked for the Avanzina Family. ( Dave and Emma Jewel Avanzina , daughter Joann) He also
worked for the Pisqually Family. (August Pasquale) They owned a grocery store. They played with their children-
Eugene, Betty, Doris, Jean, Jim, and Louis. Mrs. Pisquale made dresses for her girls. She would give Ollie
Bradshaw all the scraps. Ollie would piece together the scraps and make clothes for them.
Once the family went to Texas in an old car that Ira pick up. While there they lived in a Tent city. Other families
were there also. They picked cotton, even Pauline who was only 5 years old had to pick cotton everyday.
Rosalee was a baby at that time, she stayed with someone at the camp. Ira made enough money so all 6 children
could get a new pair of shoes. Pauline remember that to take a shower-you would put cold water in a bucket with
holes in it. Someone would hold the bucket over you, that was your shower. Also, some families would bake
biscuits over a fire in a large iron skillet. Sometimes the Bradshaw children would get the hot biscuits from other
families. Ira made a trade with someone for a flat bed truck. They used the truck to take the family back to
Coalgate. They stayed at Mitty Buelson house for a few weeks until they found a place to live.
Pauline was 17 when the family moved to Coalgate the second time. From there she came out to California to
help her sister Katherine. Katherine had just had Willis James.
Right after that Ira and Ollie moved to Cotton Wood. While in cottonwood, Ira was working on a roof. A strong
wind came, he fell and broke his leg.
Ira and Ollie moved back to Coalgate. Pauline had saved money and helped them buy a small piece of land that
had a small house on it. This was outside of Coalgate, near the Muddy Boggy River. (Ira kept the mineral rights
to this property. In 2007, a rig was set up on the property, and gas was found. It is in the process of being
pumped out. We have been told it should go for many years. A second rig will be set up in 2008)
When Pauline was married to Floyd Rock- she, Floyd, and Curtis went out to Coalgate and brought Ira and Ollie
to Antioch, California. This was about 1950. They first went to Woodrow Stringfellow’s in Wewonka, Ok to get
a trailer to move Ira and Ollie. That was the last time Pauline saw Patsy age 8, Betty age 6, Carolyn age 4. (The
girl’s mother was Lorene Bradshaw-Pauline’s oldest sister. Lorene and her infant son died in a Tornado.)
Woodrow had just remarried to Betty. ( Carol died in 2006 of cancer. We did see Patsy a few years ago. She
came for Katherine Harrison’s funeral.)
OTHER MEMORIES:
17
When Pauline was 5 years old, she remembers looking through the cracks in the floorboards, she saw a quarter.
Grandpa Ira got it out; he used it to buy medicine for one of the children that were sick.
One time a traveling photographer came by their house. Grandma Ollie had him take pictures of the kids, she was
going to buy the picture with a chicken. Ira would not let her, he wanted to keep the chicken for food.
Pauline remembers that her mother, Ollie, told her a story-
Ollie’s family was traveling by wagon. (This would be John F and Eliza Purdy and their children) It was
Christmas time, Ollie hung a stocking in the wagon for Santa. Her brothers teased her, and they put a rock in the
stocking.
When Ira’s father was very ill, and dieing- Ira went to the store at 3 am, woke up the owner, and bought a steak.
He took it to his father- William Theodore Bradshaw. Ira had not seen his father for many years. Pauline
worked, and sent money to her mother and father to help them out. With this money Ira was able to go visit his
father at least 3 times before he died.
Pauline’s first husband was Carl Oscar Mize. Carl is Curtis Duane Garcia’s birth father.
Carl was in the army and stationed at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. Pauline worked with Carl’s sister,
Violet, at the Paper Mill in Antioch, Ca. Pauline lived with Violet and her mother, Dora, for awhile- that is how
she met Carl. Carl had 3 or 4 brothers, she can not remember their names. They were only married about 3 years.
Carl, Pauline, Curtis lived in Antioch, California. Carl spend all his money on alcohol, drank all the time. When
Curt was born, he never came to the hospital to see Pauline and the baby. Pauline left him several times, he
would find them and talk her into going back, which she did. She finally left him for good.
She met and married Floyd Rock. Harvey Johnson introduced Floyd to Pauline. They were married about 3 years
9 months. They lived in the house on Alpha Way in Antioch, CA. Floyd died of a Heart attack at home. Floyd
Alvin Rock was born Nov. 7, 1915 in Nebraska. He died Sept. 28, 1952 Antioch, CA.
In 1953 she met Victor John Garcia. Pauline was still working at the Paper Mill in Antioch. She was friends with
Helen Garcia- who was Joseph Garcia’s second wife. (Vic’s brother) Helen introduced Pauline to Victor. On a
first date with Victor they went to a pool in Antioch. Other family members were there-Patty, Vangie, Louie (this
was the only time Pauline saw him), Lee, Ann, Joe, Helen, and some others. They were married November 1953.
They spent their honeymoon in Carmel, California.
Notes for Victor John Garcia:
Victor was born in San Francisco, CA. His Baptism Certificate shows his name as Vito Garcia. At some time he
started going by Victor John. He lived there as a young boy. By the time he was 6, the family was living in
Redwood City, CA. His 1925 school picture- he is 10 years old, the school is in San Francisco. The 1930 census
(San Francisco pages 20 and 22) has the family in San Francisco on Noe Street. His parents were divorced at
that time.
At some time the family moved to Hanford, CA. They lived in a house that was owned by Aunt Mary Vierra.
(Aunt Mary's husband-Caetano Vieira-was Ana's brother) They family was very poor. Victor went to Hanford
High School. He had many cousins living in Hanford. Many Vieira cousins still live there today.
Victor's first marriage was to a Maria (last name unknown). They were married 4 years, then divorced, no
children. About 1947-1950? Maria died a year after they were divorced.
Helen Garcia (joes wife) introduced Vic to Pauline. They were married in 1953. They bought their house at 907
Mockingbird Lane, Sunnyvale, CA in 1954. Vic was living there when he passed away. He died with colon
cancer- age 73 3/4 (would have been 74 in Aug.) June 16, 1988
NOTES FROM VICTOR JOHN GARCIA18
(Taken by Patrick and Kathy Spencer about March 1988.
He showed us his photo albums when he worked for the CCC.)
Worked for the CCC (California Conservation Corps). Went to Yuka Creek near Bakersfield, CA- 1930 He
worked on the road crew. His job was to shovel dirt into the trucks. He caught poison oak a lot. He remembered
the food was not very good. He was discharged from this camp. He reenlisted in another camp. He could not go
home because his mother was not working.
He went to Eureka to work at Hokins Bar Camp. It was a good camp, good food, they were fed well. He worked
with a telephone crew- they blazed the trail so other crews could come in and put in telephone poles. He worked
there for 6 months.
Next he worked on a small foot bridge that was built across the Trinity River. The forest service asked for the best
men to do the job, he was one of the first picked.
His next job was at Roads End Camp- Here they built a bridge across the Kern River in
Bakersfield. This was a foot bridge for a lumber mill. It was hard work. Victor was one of the first picked again
to work on this bridge. Victor ran the saw. They built forms to pour concrete. He built many of the forms himselfhe
was proud of his work.
He met the rangers daughter- Betty Brock. They almost got married, but he could not afford a wife at that time.
When that job ended, his twin sister- Victoria told him to come to Eureka. His brother in law (Fred Howard)
would get him a job. Instead his brother Joseph was able to get Vic to Oakley, CA to help cut wood for a store. A
friend, Alfred Gomes, drove a truck for a Cannery. Vic was able to get a job there, drove a truck at night. He
also got a job driving a truck for Namponi Brothers. He drove oil to the town of Avon, Ca.
Victor got his drivers license for driving trucks. He also hauled tomatoes to Sacramento. He did not know how to
double clutch, but he never got stuck in the mud. While driving tomatoes one day, he saw gypsy women picking
tomatoes. He had his fortune told for 25 cents. He was told he would have a long life. He was working for Weston
Cannery in Antioch, CA. He did not belong to the union, so he needed the bosses permission to drive fruit. He
drove peaches, asparagus, apricots, to Ball Cannery. He took peaches to Modesto.
During this time he got his draft notice- this was 1940. He put his occupation as truck driver. He drove
amphibious trucks and supplies to the soldiers. He did his basic training at Camp Roberts. He was in the 4th
Infantry Regiment Division.
After basic training he was sent to Anchorage, Alaska. Vic was on the USS Maheia. He got sea sick. They
invaded Kiska and Attu. He was a truck driver bringing supplies to the soldiers. The U S Army was fighting the
Japanese. One time he was driving some soldiers out to an airplane. He double shifted the truck and went right
through some mud. When he got back to the main building, his supervisor said he was in trouble. He asked what
he did wrong. Turns out a Cornell was sitting next to him in the truck—you are not suppose to double shift the
army trucks.
When the fighting ended in Alaska, the men were sent back on a ship. Vic did not have any sea sickness that time.
They saw a ship that had split in half. He helped bring the soldiers on board their ship.
From Seattle he went to Fort Benning in Georgia to OCF. There he did transportation, he took officers out for
field training.
About a year and a half after getting out of the army- Victor went to visit a friend in Sunnyside, San Francisco.
His friend told him United Air Lines was hiring. He went to United and took a 2 hour test- he got hired. His first
job with United was working in cabin supply. After that he drove small trucks that took food and supplies to the
DC3s.
He also worked on DC4, DC8. He moved to the Ramp Service. He also worked on JAL
Planes. When the wide body planes came out, he moved to that section. He drove a double axel truck with
supplies for the airplane kitchens. He stayed in this department until he retired.

92. John Rickman Jr.6 Purdy (John Rickman5, Cordy Adwell4, John Franklin3, John2, James1) was born 06
Aug 1941 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Notes for John Rickman Jr. Purdy:
Notes from John R Purdy Jr. (March 2008)-
I was born August 6, 1941 in Tulsa, Ok. He was adoped by John R and Madera Purdy. They took him home at 4
days old. His birth family's name was Flemming. He was told that he was the last of 12 children. The family was
not well off, the father worked for the railroad, they kept their first 6 children, the last 6 were adopted out.
They could not have children, so they decided to adopt. I know they tried to adopt a little boy baby before me (I
think in Oklahoma City) But for some reason had to give him back. They never talked about it. His parents also
adopted a daughter, his sister Susan.
Cordy was blind by 1946-1948. Lived in a tiny 2 ½ room house in West Tulsa. When I would visit I would be
asked a question. Then I would get a peppermint candy stick.
Dad told the story about the farm and cotton. Frank Robetson was governor of Oklahoma during the green corn
rebellion. He convinced farmers to hold their cotton off the market to raise the price. The effort failed and the
family almost starved that year.
Also told the story of taking a load of watermelons to Coalgate during the drpression years of late teens or early
20s. They would sit all day trying to sell them. Could not even sell them for 10 cents each.
In the oil boom 1920’s both my dad (John R Purdy Sr.) and Cordy went to the oil fields to work. He was only a
teenager. He was at the development of the Sinclair field at Cromwell Oklahoma. A lawless town where
anything goes. Killings everyday, Saloons everywhere. They lived in company houses (dorms) had bunk beds, 4
beds tall.
Eventually, over the years all of the living family moved to Tulsa. Dad told me they paid $5.00 a month rent for
the little house I was born in.
It would seem that me and my boys are the last of the Purdy line in Oklahoma. My cousins were all desperately
trying to marry me off so the line would’nt end with me. Never married but have adopted 5 boys, 2 still at home.
Other memories from John Purdy Jr:
They lived in Tulsa until John was in Kindergarten. At that time they would go with his father to different jobs- he
changed schools often-never stayed a full year at one school. He has lived in almost every state and parts of
Canada. His parents liked Canada so much that they almost retired there in 1968. He also went with his dad to
some foreign jobs- They went to Turkey to build a NATO pipeline. (while there he spent weekends traveling the
countryside. He went to Beirut, Lebanon, Cairo Egypt--this was before all the trouble there. ) He went to many
24
parts of Europe, London, Milan, Paris, Geneva and Rome. While in Rome they were at the Vatican City when
Pope Pius XII was greeting the Ambassador from Norway. They got to crowd inside the church and see him up
close.
During the Cold War his dad was on jobs in the Middle East (40s, 50s, 60s) At one point during the was between
Arab and Israel his company had a plan of excape- just in case- It was to drive as far as they could toward teh
Syrian boarder and then walk to Damascus. Fortunately they never had to use that plan.
John graduated from Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, OK. He went to San Diego State College. He got a
degree in Social Science and Geography. He wanted to be a teacher, but found out he needed another one to two
years. He then went up to Claremont near Los Angeles, CA and got a degree in Religious History, while there he
worked in the college library full time. After graduation he could not get a teaching job, the whole country was in
job turmoil, he went to work as a probation councelor in the juvinile prison in Los Angeles. He worked there a
short time, saw his unit partner get beatten by the inmates, he quit the next week. He could not find work in
California so he came back to Oklahoma. Took awhile to find a job, but got hired by the University of Central
Oklahoma. He worked in the library as faculty, worked in the graduate library for 29 years.
After being back in Oklahoma for a year, he bought the farm, began raising hogs and cattle. He had to commute
1 hour to work. He has been on the farm in Agra, Ok for 35 years.
When he moved back to Oklahoma, his parents (John and Madera Purdy) stayed in California. His sister looked
in on them from time to time. She lived in Playa Del Rey. As they began to have poor health, John brought his
parents to Agra, Ok in 1972, and lived with him on the farm until their deaths.
John never married, but wanted children. He adopted 5 boys, all from troubled homes. He now spends his time
keeping up with the farm in Agra, Ok. His health is not the best, but he does what he can. (2008)

Children of John Rickman Jr. Purdy are:
162 i. Timothy Allen Fournier7 Purdy, born 22 Dec 1973 in Tampa, Florida.
Notes for Timothy Allen Fournier Purdy:
Timothy's parents were drifters- went from place to place working odd jobs, or living on welfare. His
birth father beat him all the time and his brother also. Timothy was caught steeling, and he also sniffed
gasoline. He was put into foster care- this is how John Purdy met him. He took Tim in as a foster child.
Tim's birth parents could visit, one day they offered to sell Tim to John Purdy for $10,000! John
reported it to the social workers. They had already sold their older son to a rancher in Kansas. The
parents no longer had legal rights to see Tim. He lived with John for 2 years, then ran away. He had just
turned 17.
163 ii. Derrick Wayne Sharey Purdy, born 23 Sep 1981 in Caribou, Maine.
Notes for Derrick Wayne Sharey Purdy:
In June 1995 Derrick came to John Purdys home as a foster child. He was 13, his childhood was very
brutal, he had mental problems.
He lived with John until 2001, then went to Maine where he had some Aunts and Uncles. He ended up
living on the streets for several years, he came to see John a few times. In May 2007 he wanted to come
back for good. He did, got a job- worked for 2 months, quit, went back to Maine and living on the
streets. John has not heard from him since.
164 iii. Ernesto Duran Hernandez Purdy, born 22 Dec 1984 in Monahans, Texas.
Notes for Ernesto Duran Hernandez Purdy:
Ernesto came from New Mexico. He is 1/8 Mescalero Apache, and 7/8 Mexican. He and his brother
David came to live with John in Feb. 1998. Both boys had been abused. His brother ended up living with
a family in Tulsa. Ernesto grew up with John, had many friends, the girls called him a movie star. He
moved out in Oct. 2003 with out telling John he was leaving. He is now serving in the Special Forces in
Iraq. He told John to never write to him or try to contact him. John hears about him through a friend at
church.
Ernesto was diagnosed with Reastive Attachment Disorder, the doctor told John that he would never feel
that John was family. Because of all the abuse as a young child, he would be a loner all his life. John
has not seen him since he left home.
165 iv. Donald Lee Purdy, born 31 Oct 1991 in Dallas, Texas.
Notes for Donald Lee Purdy:
May 2006 Donald and his brother Derek came to live with John Purdy. They are from Texas, and also
come from a very abusive family. John has said therapy seems to be working with Donald and Derek
(where it did not help the other boys). They both ended up dropping out of school. Donald is now
enrolled at a Cherokee nation Boarding School. He loves it, and is doing well. He has caught up in his
high school studies and is a month ahead. He is training in Culinary Arts. He will be 17 in Oct. 2008
and can begin carpentery and other building trade occupations.
