Samuel Kennerly (d. January 18, 1749/50)

Samuel Kennerly was born in England, and died January 18, 1749/50 in St. Mark's Parish, Culpeper County, Virginia. He married Eleanor on 1709 in England.

Notes for Samuel Kennerly:
Samuel arrived in Virginia about July 1715. The work prepared by Mrs. Mary Larned (Kennerly) Taylor has Samuel arriving from Scotland. There is no proof of this for the ship he arrived on came from Liverpool England. He received a patent for 1750 acres of land known as Delemere Forest, June 19, 1735, from Governor William Gooch of Virginia. About 70% of all Kennerly's are descendents of Samuel. He was born in England and died 18 Jan 1750 in St. Mark's Parish, Culpeper County, Virginia.

More About Samuel Kennerly and Eleanor:
Marriage: 1709, England.

Children of Samuel Kennerly and Eleanor are:

1. +James Kennerly, b. 1715, d. June 1797, Augusta Co., Va.

Hi, Bill -

Hmmm... Number 1.7 on that North Carolina Kennerlys, etc site is a James Kenley born circa 1803, who married a Margaret Smith in Nov 1820. He says he hasn't found them later ... maybe because they went to Franklin Co, GA?

The research indicates this James was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Kennerly of Cabarrus Co, NC. It wouldn't be surprising if they named their oldest daughter Elizabeth Caroline (Caroline may have been Margaret's mother's name). Don't remember seeing many Samuel's in the family, tho....

~Lyn

We'll have to check on the Joshua! They may have moved back and forth a bit, too. The tax rolls for GA list possibly 5 different Kinley's in Franklin Co from 1802-1819 -- Edmund, William, and poss an Edward in 1802 ... and a Darby and "unknown" in 1818-1819. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Caroline's oldest daughter was born in Nc, before they moved to Habersham ... yet James and Margaret seem to have been in Franklin Co since the 1830's.

-------------------------------------------------------

I can probably put your mind at ease a bit about the Starnes ... I'm pretty sure I confirmed it with Mary Frances' death certificate from 1932 or whatever. When I can dig it back out, I'll scan it and add it online :-)

"Alsa" was actually a boy. He married an Epps, but not from the same line that's so prominent in the Athens area. They apparently had one son die at birth or young, that's buried in Oconee Hills cemetery, I think .. .and then two other sons, Alsa Jr and Fred. On the 1930 Census Alsa and his wife are dead, but the boys are still living together, with several of their maternal aunts and uncles. Neither had married at that point, and I haven't tracked them for sure afterwards yet, so I don't know if they had any descendants.

-------------------------------------------------------

My comment on Mary Frances' line is that her oldest son was born before Andrew Ross seems to have come to America (and he and Mary Frances married). So I'm thinking she was married before. Her oldest daughter was also born before she and Andrew married ... but who knows . They were Catholic, so other Newly-Found Cousin and I were trying to research through the church in Athens, but it's on an 'as the clerk has time' basis. On the other hand ... Mary Frances' surname in the marriage book is Kinley, two children or not.

Do you have the background on Elizabeth Starnes? There was a Mary A. Starnes living with James & Elizabeth in 1860. The likeliest candidate I've found for the Starnes family is in Elbert County on the 1850 Census. There is a Mary Starnes listed as head of household. Then, the rest are initials only (grrrr, and a pox on enumerators who only listed initials!) .. but there is a E. S. Starnes the right age for Elizabeth. Then, in 1852 there is a marriage record in Elbert Co for Elizabeth Starnes and a James "Kerby". I'm wondering if this is them, since Kinley could well have been mis-transcribed as Kerby depending on the writing.

Received from???

Elizabeth Caroline Kinley (b 20 Nov 1823 NC, d. 2 Dec 1900, Habersham Co., GA):

I had searched & searched for a Kinley family and had even began to research remotely similar names in the area, with no luck. But recently, while searching for census records for a completely different family in Franklin County, Ga, I STUMBLED across one James Kinley. He was non-existent on the census index. Imagine my surprise; he was the ONLY Kinley family that I have found any where in this area, much less this one county!!! From what I gathered from the 1840 - 1850 census, he was born @ 1799 in South Carolina and married Margaret ?, who was born @ 1804. Their children (or possible children as per these two census reports) are:
OUR Elizabeth Caroline Kinley, b. 20 Nov 1823
Unknown Son, b. between 1824 - 1830
Unknown Son, b. between 1824 - 1830
James Kinley, Jr., b. @ 1829
Margaret Kinley, b @ 1833
Unknown daughter, born between 1834 - 1840
(could be Margaret or Mary??)
Mary Kinley, b @ 1838 and
William Kinley, born @ 1841

Buried in Ebenezer Methodist Church cemetery, Macon, GA

John W. Kinley - born 1865, died Summer of 1920

Ida Mae Westfall Kinley - born 1866, died 1922

Ada Bell Parker Kinley - born 1887, died 1921

James Bartow Kinley - born 1914, died 1915

Contacted on 7/27/02

Mr. Clay has a book containing cemetery records, and all of the above names were mentioned are buried in the Ebenezer Methodist Church cemetery. All of the graves are in a plot but none were seen during an inspection (probably meant none were identified and not necessarily looked for too hard). He said he would go with me to the cemetery to see if we could locate any of the graves. He indicated he could find the plot.

The records state all of the names as initials (i.e. J.W. Kinley, J.B. Kinley). The records were wrong indicating A.P. Kinley who died in 1921 as the wife of W.M. Kinley. It should have read W.C. Kinley.

I believe he also said there is a W.M. Kinley buried in the plot too. I didn’t get any dates but it may have been John Albert, son of John W. Kinley, who died as a child.

There is a W.M. Parker buried there too, and there may have been other Parker’s, Ada Bell Parker Kinley’s relatives.

Other relatives not necessarily buried there:

Harry Kinley, born in 1888, son of John W. Kinley *

Emma Kinley Stringfellow, born in 1894 daughter of John W. Kinley

Charles T. Kinley, born in 1897, son of John W. Kinley *

William F. Kinley, born in 1856, brother of John W. Kinley

Emma Kinley Simmons, born in 1871, sister of John W. Kinley

* not buried there

After much research I don't believe our Kinleys are related to the Wylys.

This was a post I found. The email is no good. Interesting thought!

Subject: Roll Call - Wyly / McKinley / Kinley

Hi, I know by the general rules of the roll call that I should stick to one surname, but this probable ancestor apparently changed his name from Wyly to Kinley, a shortened version of his Grandmother's maiden name,
for whom he was named.

In searching for the parents of my GGG Grandmother, ELIZABETH CAROLINE KINLEY (b. 20 Nov 1823 NC, m. ELIAS MITCHELL BENTLEY, d. 2 Dec 1900 in Habersham Co, GA), I have found only one KINLEY family in the area, that of one JAMES KINLEY who appears in the 1830 and 1840 census in Franklin Co., GA. The BENTLEY family moved from Union Co., SC to Franklin Co, GA & then to Habersham Co, GA, so it is likely that Elias & Elizabeth C. met in Franklin County. The JAMES KINLEY listed in the Franklin Co, GA census did have a daughter of ELIZABETH CAROLINE's age.

Searching for info on JAMES KINLEY, I came across him listed in a database at ancestry.com called "Individual Gene Pool," which listed his date of birth as 13 Jan 1799, death 8 May 1857, & parents names as HARRIS MCKINLEY WYLY & ARTE TAYLOR. Other children of Harris & Arte listed in this database were:
Isabella (b 1795 NC), Sarah (b. 1810 - AL), John (1812 - AL), & Christopher K. (b 1814 - AL) Other info that I have found lists HARRIS MCKINLEY WYLY's date/place of death as abt. 1850 in Washington, TN.

The "Individual Gene Pool" database listed HARRIS MCKINLEY WYLY's parents as JAMES WYLY and MARTHA HARRIS. From another source, I found that MARTHA HARRIS' parents were listed as JAMES HARRIS, b abt. 1674 in Northern Ireland, and JANE MCKINLEY, who died abt 1784 in Mecklenburg County, NC - now Cabarrus County, NC.

I have no idea why James McKinley Wyly changed / shortened his name to James Kinley, but would love to find / compare notes with other descendants of any of the folks listed above. Sorry to have been so
long-winded!

Betty Cooper
