Notes

"Shortly after the Conquest, King Malcolm of Scotland created an insurrection in Yorkshire, whereupon William, The Conqueror so devastated Yorkshire that 10 years later when he held the first census, called the Domesday Book, the assets in Yorkshire were considered so worthless that Yorkshire was omitted from the census. This left a vacant spot in the population; and, while the Normans became generally the ruling class throughout the country, Yorkshire in particular was repopulated by the Norman tide, and a concentration of the "Thor 'stane" group was effected in that area. We find, therefore, that many of our Thornton immigrants to this country were from Yorkshire, or the region between Cambridge and York."

VAN'S CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH

Van's Creek Baptist Church, established early in 1785 by Rev. Dozier Thornton, Revolutionary soldier and Virginian, was named for an Indian convert, David Vann, famed Chief of the Cherokees. Through the 6th Baptist church in Georgia, it is the oldest in continuous service. Rev. Thornton was its pastor for 43 years. Original members were Rev. Dozier Thornton, his wife, Lucy Elizabeth Thornton, Elizabeth Thornton, William Arnold, first Deacon and Clerk, Susan Arnold, Nathan Morgan, Elizabeth Morgan, Thomas Gilbert, John White, Milly White.

New information has come to light via DNA. The DNA seems to say that San(d)ford was not the son of Dozier, but a descendant through a brother of either Mark 1 or 2. This person probably came to GA with Dozier.
